September 8, 2017 is Stand Up To Cancer Day

September 8, 2017 is Stand Up To Cancer Day

The second Friday of September is Stand Up To Cancer Day, a day where we honor those affected by cancer. This year, Stand Up To Cancer Day falls on Friday, September 8, 2017.

According to the American Cancer Society, 50% of men and 33% of women will suffer from cancer in their lifetimes. That’s a staggering figure, and one which we must face – but one which we do not have to accept as fact for the future. It’s also a percentage that virtually guarantees each of us will be touched by cancer in some way – either personally or through the experience of a friend, acquaintance or loved one.

The 2nd Friday in September is Stand Up To Cancer Day. Join the fight!

2017 marks the 11th anniversary of Stand Up To Cancer Day, which was first observed in 2007. The organization Stand Up To Cancer is determined to fight, cure and eradicate all forms of cancer through fundraising, awareness and community support.

From the official Stand Up To Cancer Mission Statement:

Stand Up To Cancer’s (SU2C) mission is to raise funds to accelerate the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.

SU2C brings together the best and the brightest researchers and mandates collaboration among the cancer community. By galvanizing the entertainment industry, SU2C has set out to generate awareness, educate the public on cancer prevention and help more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors.

Cancer may seem like an indomitable foe, but if each of us takes on a small amount of effort, the results can be incredible. Peter Salerno (the owner/founder of our parent company, Peter Salerno Inc.) takes part in the annual Lavallette Breast Cancer Walk, a New Jersey-based walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

It’s a small gesture and a small commitment of time and energy, but walking for cancer awareness (and research funding) makes a world of difference. If each of us took the time to walk, donate, fund research, offer support to those fighting cancer and their families, or simply inspire those around us to join the fight, think of the massive steps we could make as a world community in the fight against cancer!

The most direct way to take part in Stand Up To Cancer Day is to make a donation and use the hashtag #StandUpToCancerDay on social media. It’s a simple and effective combination that will ensure you are raising money and awareness to combat cancer.

Stand up. Take part. Join the fight. Together, we can take steps to Stand Up To Cancer and make this disease a thing of the past. Thank you!

August 17th is National Nonprofits’ Day: Join In!

August 17th is National Nonprofits’ Day in the United States. It’s a day when individuals, businesses and organizations are encouraged to find, support, donate to and raise awareness for nonprofit organizations that resonate with them.

Nonprofit organizations don’t just raise funds and awareness for worthy causes; they are a vital part of the American economy. According to Johns Hopkins and Tactical Philanthrophy Reports, the nonprofit sector provided 5.4% of the entire U.S. GDP in 2012 – a figure that rounds out to $887.3 billion dollars.

The primary goals of nonprofits are, of course, altruism, research and awareness. Each of us has been positively impacted by a nonprofit in some way during our lives, whether directly or to the benefit of friends or family. National Nonprofits’ Day is the perfect opportunity to “jumpstart” your altruistic side and support a nonprofit that means something special to you or your business.

For our parent company Peter Salerno Inc., that support manifests itself every year in the form of the Lavallette Breast Cancer Walk. The walk occurs in Lavallette, New Jersey, and is hosted by the American Cancer Society, the Tone Foundation and the Lavallette Municipal Alliance. August 6, 2017 marked the 14th annual Lavallette Breast Cancer Walk.

Peter Salerno once again participated in the walk on behalf of his company and family, as well as family and loved ones who have bravely battled breast cancer. Peter Salerno Inc. is a proud sponsor of the 14th annual Lavallette Breast Cancer Walk.

The ways you can support a nonprofit you care about are innumerable. From donations of money to donations of time, from raising awareness to collecting goods and capital, getting involved with a nonprofit organization is rewarding to you and the world around you!

Take it from us – nonprofit organizations are always happy for your support, so don’t be shy about reaching out to one that means something to you!

St. Andrew’s is a spiritual home for Peter Salerno and his family, where Peter’s children Anthony and Gabrielle were both married.

It is with great honor and pride that we announce Peter Salerno Inc. made a donation of 99 turkeys to St. Anthony’s Food Pantry for Thanksgiving 2016. Now, we’re asking you to make a similar pledge!

If you’re reading this article, it’s likely you can afford to donate at least one turkey to your local food pantry or food bank. If it’s not a turkey, food pantries are grateful to accept non-perishable food items, canned goods, coffees and shelf-stable drink items, stuffing, etc. – anything you can think of to make someone else’s Thanksgiving table more plentiful this holiday season.

Breast cancer was always an important issue to Peter Salerno. It hit a little too close to home when Peter’s sister was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago.

Thankfully, Peter Salerno’s sister is a breast cancer survivor. But the fight against breast cancer isn’t over until everyone who faces the disease is a survivor.

The importance of Thanksgiving can’t be exaggerated. It’s a holiday that focuses on family, togetherness, love and warmth. For one Thursday in November, family, friends and loved ones gather around a table to celebrate and give thanks for what they have, and give thanks for one another.

Not everyone is so lucky. According to the USDA, nearly 20% of American households experienced food insecurity within the last 2 years. That number includes 8.2 million American children. The challenge of providing enough food to eat for everyone in America may seem impossible – but helping those in need eat for one day a year doesn’t have to be.

For Thanksgiving 2014, Peter Salerno and Peter Salerno Inc. invite you, your family and your place of business to participate in the Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Challenge. It’s inexpensive, it’s easy, and you can’t replace the feeling you get knowing you’re giving a family in need a Thanksgiving turkey.

You may think people are not going hungry in your town. They are. You may think one turkey couldn’t possibly change a family’s life this Thanksgiving. It does.

A turkey costs about $20. We challenge you to go out, buy a turkey, and bring it to your local food pantry or soup kitchen. Trust us – they will be glad to accept it.

How to JOIN the 2014 Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Challenge:

Then, SHARE your participation in the Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Challenge with us! Here’s how:

  1. Buy a Thanksgiving turkey for those in need. (Or buy a few!)
  2. Deliver the turkey(s) to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.
  3. Take a picture of you, your turkey and your delivery.
  4. Post that picture on Twitter or Facebook with the hashtag #TurkeyChallenge.
  5. Follow or mention Peter Salerno Inc. on Twitter and Facebook, and join the conversation!

Here’s the best part: Peter Salerno Inc. will MATCH donations, turkey-for-turkey, up to the first 100 turkeys donated between now and Thanksgiving! All you need to do is post a picture of your turkey donation to Peter Salerno Inc.’s Facebook page with the hashtag #TurkeyChallenge!

Join Peter Salerno and Peter Salerno Inc. in making the 2014 Thanksgiving Turkey Donation Challenge a reality. We encourage you to make it a part of your annual Thanksgiving ritual as well.

Somewhere, someone’s Thanksgiving will mean a lot more because of you.

Peter Salerno’s Charity Work Featured By NKBA

NKBA Article Displays Peter Salerno’s Charity Work

When it comes to using prize money to help those less fortunate, Peter Salerno puts his money where his mouth is.

A recent article published by the NKBA on its official “NKBA Connect” blog focuses on award-winning master designer Peter Salerno of Peter Salerno Inc., and his charitable efforts in Zimbabwe.

Early in his career, Peter Salerno took a trip to visit the Little Company of Mary Sisters in Zimbabwe, a group that provides medicine, food and treatment to the impoverished. Peter promised himself that if he ever won any prize money for his designs, he would donate it to the Little Company of Mary Sisters. And he’s done just that – with every penny of prize money he’s won.

Not only has Peter Salerno donated all his design award money to charity, he’s matched it dollar-for-dollar out of his own pocket. Since 2003, Peter Salerno Inc. has won an astounding 19 NKBA design awards, matching their prize money each time.

Peter Salerno’s generosity and commitment to excellence has provided the Little Company of Mary Sisters in Zimbabwe with much-needed gifts like an incubator, medicine and food. Peter has also taken several mission trips to Zimbabwe himself to assist the cause.

In the article, Peter is quick to deflect any praise for his actions.

“It gives you a reason for living,” Peter was quoted as saying by the NKBA, in reference to letters written to him by the Little Company about the impact of his generosity. “When you look at those letters and know what an impact you have on those people, it brings tears to your eyes.”
