Top 7 Classic Neutral Colors For Autumn 2020 Design

Top 7 Classic Neutral Colors For Autumn 2020 Design

While 2020 has been a year for bold, vibrant colors, its backbone has always been classic, familiar shades. Look no further than Classic Blue – the 2020 Pantone Color of the year – for proof that in order for design to be audacious, it needs to dig its roots into dependable soil.

The best designers in the world understand the need for familiarity, even in their boldest creations.  This holds especially true in the world of high-end kitchen and bath design, where award-winning designers like Peter Salerno Inc. use intelligent, comfortable colors to balance vivid pops of color.

Pantone’s Autumn/Winter 2020-2021 Fashion Color Trend Report is full of colors whose names evoke fun and daring design adventures. Samba. Exuberance. Amberglow. Burnt Henna. Green Sheen. But tucked in neatly behind those intrepid shades are the sturdy classics that pull everything into focus. Dark blues, off-whites, tans and grays are the backbone of the Pantone Autumn 2020 color palette.

The 7 shades featured in the “Classics” section New York and London Autumn 2020 Fashion Color Trend Reports are smart, reliable and functional. The one crossover color in both collections, Sleet, may be the trendiest and most useful of the bunch in contemporary kitchen and bath design. An unrelenting gray that finds utility in everything from subway tile to gray flooring, wall paint to appliances, Sleet is a go-to shade for transitional kitchen and bath designers.

Blue Depths and Dress Blues are cut from the same cloth, two dark blue hues to complement Classic Blue as the 2020 Color of the Year. Almond Oil and Sheepskin provide light and rich tan options, respectively. Jet Stream is a beautiful off-white that, according to Pantone, mirrors an “affinity for raw and recycled”. And Military Olive clocks in with the ‘alternative’ neutral option; it’s an olive green tone that provides stability to an earth-toned, natural color palette.

Searching for official HTML, RGB and hex values for the Pantone Fall/Winter 2018 Classic Colors, as well as decor ideas for the home? You’ve come to the right place!

From the official Pantone release of the Fall/Winter 2018 Classic Color Palette:

While there is no ‘typical’ anymore, there remains a need for structure and foundation in everyday fashion. Our five core colors, easily worn across the seasons, are more crucial than ever. As ‘trends’ stay relevant longer, and consumers look to add variety through new textures, fabrics and beautiful combinations, these five core shades serve as the critical building blocks for your wardrobe.

While the primary audience of that release is wardrobe and fashion designers, the same core color design principles hold true when developing a world-class custom kitchen, bath, or whole home design. These 5 “classic colors” translate well into home design – especially more traditional, staid kitchen and bath designs.

Let’s take a look at the Classic Colors of Fall/Winter 2018 as named by Pantone: Sargasso Sea, Tofu, Almond Buff, Quiet Gray and Meerkat.

Sargasso Sea: The Depths of Navy Blue

Sargasso Sea was crowned “the staple color” of the neutral set in the Pantone Fall/Winter 2018 collection. An intriguing navy blue that’s dark and deep (like its namesake), Sargasso Sea actually benefits from this depth, becoming easier to pair than most navy tones. While not quite as universal as black or gray, Sargasso Sea approaches that territory far more closely than other blueish neutrals, and increases its versatility. This isn’t an “all-over” wall color by any means, but Sargasso Sea is usable just about anywhere in the home.

Tofu: The Off-White of Fall 2018

Off-white hues run the risk of being bland. Tofu’s just curious enough to buck that trend. Are we dealing with an ivory shade? Is the “off-white” note more towards a taupe? Whatever your eye tells you, Tofu is a rich, creamy off-white that attracts the eye. While it’s not a perfect neutral pairing for any primary design color, Tofu does the trick as a primary color itself, particularly in a clean, simple bath design with elegant features and brushed fixtures.

Almond Buff: The Comfortable Taupe

Almond Buff is a delicious shade of taupe that reminds us a lot of a light cup of breakfast blend coffee – one milk, two sugars, and an inviting aroma. A “natural camel hue with understated appeal” (according to Pantone), Almond Buff is the most “pairable” tan in this season’s collection. Almond Buff is a willing and amenable partner to light and dark shades, looks great against solid white, and fits neatly into the design scheme of a neutrally-based kitchen or bath design.

Quiet Gray: The Muted, Safe Bet

When in doubt, a muted cool gray is a savvy choice for home design in 2018. From backsplashes to kitchen islands, subway tile to bathroom furnishings, Quiet Gray is about as versatile a color as you’ll find in the Pantone Fall/Winter 2018 collection. Try it just about anywhere – in the hands of a world-class designer, it can become a lasting staple of your home’s color scheme.

Meerkat: The Slightly Audacious Brown

Perhaps the singular smash hit of the Pantone Fall/Winter 2018 Classic Colors on the runway, Meerkat will certainly be in demand in terms of fall fashion. But where is Meerkat’s place in home color design? While it doesn’t appear to be quite the “right brown” for a primary color (especially on walls), Meerkat is a cheeky shade of brown that works well in accessories, decor, and perhaps in wainscoting, chair rails or crown moulding (although it must be paired properly). Have fun playing with this one!

Exploring Pantone Spring 2018 Colors: The Classic Color Palette

Exploring Pantone Spring 2018 Colors: The Classic Color Palette

The story of the Pantone Spring 2018 Color Palette is two-fold. Not only did Pantone expand its primary field of season colors from 10 to 12 for Spring 2018, they also added a separate set of 4 Classic Colors to the collection.

Why add this separate set of Classic Colors to the Pantone Spring 2018 color palette? They don’t necessarily “go with” the other 12 colors in the Spring 2018 seasonal set; conversely, they’re a bit more muted and neutrally-based than some of the vivid, floral colors like Cherry Tomato, Lime Punch and Spring Crocus in the collection.

As Pantone explains on their official website:

For many consumers, classic color is the mainstay of the wardrobe and the foundational core upon which they start building their own personal style. The core classic shades play a critical role in any [design], and we wanted to highlight the nuance of these classic colors for the spring 2018 season.

The Spring 2018 Classic Color Palette screams “yacht party” with its 4 nautical colors. Sailor Blue, Harbor Mist, Warm Sand, and Coconut Milk are a traditional color design lover’s dream come true.

As a site with a strong focus on custom kitchen design, bath design, and home design, Design Your Lifestyle finds the Classic Color palette in Pantone’s Spring 2018 collection to be vitally important. 2017 may well be remembered as the year that neutral tones began to dominate the home design landscape, moving from accent and complementary colors to the primary focus of many kitchen and bath designs and color schemes.

Pantone made sure to reflect that trend in this “mini-collection” of Classic Colors for Spring 2018. Take a closer look at the four colors selected!

Warm Sand (PANTONE 15-1214)

Much like its “real life” namesake, Warm Sand is soothing, welcome and inviting. It’s also one of the most reliable, malleable taupe/tan tones Pantone has selected in years.

Harbor Mist (PANTONE 14-4202)

When we look back on the Spring 2018 Classic Color palette, Harbor Mist may end up being our favorite. This smoky, beautiful blend of blue and gray allows you to use a gray-tone neutral in your design without sacrificing a little ‘pop’ of color.

Coconut Milk (PANTONE 11-0608)

Coconut Milk is ever-so-slightly off-white, with just enough of a touch of gray to blend in nicely with this set of 4 classic colors.

Sailor Blue (PANTONE 19-4034)

If you want a vintage nautical navy shade of blue, you’re not going to get much better than Sailor Blue. A strong accent color and complementary shade, Sailor Blue is probably a tad too dark to work in home design as a primary shade, but if used effectively it provides a lush, oceanic feel.
