Cinco De Mayo is more than just a big party – although a great excuse to fiesta is always welcome! For Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and people of Mexican heritage worldwide, Cinco De Mayo is a day of national pride, honor and triumph. This article will help you celebrate Cinco De Mayo in proper style!

Cinco De Mayo literally means “May 5th” in Spanish. It’s a celebration of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory at the Battle of Puebla over the heavily-favored French Empire in 1862 – of course, the battle took place on May 5th. On that day, the French forces outnumbered Mexicans by double, but the Mexicans prevailed and established a sense of national pride and unity that had been lost in previous conflicts.

While not exactly an “Independence Day”, Cinco De Mayo is a celebration and recognition of Mexican pride, spirit, and bravery in the face of adversity. Outside Mexico, the holiday is used to promote Mexican culture, customs, food and music throughout the world, and is especially popular in the United States, Canada and Japan.

As you might expect, the colors closely associated with Cinco de Mayo are the official colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green. But what are the official colors of the flag of Mexico?

Pairing Pantone Spring 2018 Neutrals For Home Design

The Pantone Spring 2018 Color Collection has produced some of our favorite neutral tones in years.

Beige, white, off-white and gray are all present in this season’s collection, and each tone (be it classic or contemporary) brings with it a myriad of design pairings and design options. While the needs of home designers are different than those designing for the runway, the Pantone Spring 2018 color palette still serves as a helpful guide and inspiration for home design experts and home owners alike.

From classic gray and white tones to a warm, inviting beige and a blushing off-white stunner, here are 4 of our favorite neutral shades from the Pantone Spring 2018 color collection – and some other Pantone Spring 2018 colors we think pair nicely with each.

Harbor Mist: A Classic Gray Neutral

Sturdy, reliable and not-too-dark, Harbor Mist is a classic gray neutral. It’s a light enough shade of gray to provide a stable anchor for your design without darkening the room. Part of the Classic Colors sub-set of the Pantone Spring 2018 collection, Harbor Mist is most useful with two color palettes in mind: nautical and primary colors. (Think blues, whites, reds, beiges, and yellows).

Coconut Milk: A Versatile Off-White Neutral

Coconut Milk is a fantastic slightly off-white neutral that plays directly into the trend of white kitchen designs and living space designs that has dominated 2017 and 2018 home design. We love the idea of pairing it with “woody” browns like Emperador, or bold jewel tones like Arcadia. The best part of designing with Coconut Milk is that it can serve as a ‘blank canvas’ for bolder colors, or the fresh white focus of your design.

Almost Mauve: A Blushing Neutral

Almost Mauve is such a sneaky and fun neutral to play with if you like warm tones and pastels. A closer look at its shade reveals a slight blush – but is it rosy? Is it lavender? Exploring Pantone Spring 2018 Colors: The Classic Color Palette

The story of the Pantone Spring 2018 Color Palette is two-fold. Not only did Pantone expand its primary field of season colors from 10 to 12 for Spring 2018, they also added a separate set of 4 Classic Colors to the collection.

Why add this separate set of Classic Colors to the Pantone Spring 2018 color palette? They don’t necessarily “go with” the other 12 colors in the Spring 2018 seasonal set; conversely, they’re a bit more muted and neutrally-based than some of the vivid, floral colors like Cherry Tomato, Lime Punch and Spring Crocus in the collection.

As Pantone explains on their official website:

For many consumers, classic color is the mainstay of the wardrobe and the foundational core upon which they start building their own personal style. The core classic shades play a critical role in any [design], and we wanted to highlight the nuance of these classic colors for the spring 2018 season.

The Spring 2018 Classic Color Palette screams “yacht party” with its 4 nautical colors. Sailor Blue, Harbor Mist, Warm Sand, and Coconut Milk are a traditional color design lover’s dream come true.

Warm Sand (PANTONE 15-1214)

Much like its “real life” namesake, Warm Sand is soothing, welcome and inviting. It’s also one of the most reliable, malleable taupe/tan tones Pantone has selected in years.

Harbor Mist (PANTONE 14-4202)

When we look back on the Spring 2018 Classic Color palette, Harbor Mist may end up being our favorite. This smoky, beautiful blend of blue and gray allows you to use a gray-tone neutral in your design without sacrificing a little ‘pop’ of color.

Coconut Milk (PANTONE 11-0608)

Coconut Milk is ever-so-slightly off-white, with just enough of a touch of gray to blend in nicely with this set of 4 classic colors.

Sailor Blue (PANTONE 19-4034)

If you want a vintage nautical navy shade of blue, you’re not going to get much better than Sailor Blue. A strong accent color and complementary shade, Sailor Blue is probably a tad too dark to work in home design as a primary shade, but if used effectively it provides a lush, oceanic feel.
