Design Flashback | Best Bath Design Award Winner, 2014

During the spring of 2020, we’re taking some time to look back at our favorite designs of the last decade. One such design was honored by Signature Kitchens & Baths Magazine as the top bathroom design of 2014.

Created by our parent company Peter Salerno Inc. (the most award-winning custom kitchen and bath design firm since 2001), this French-inspired design lives in a gorgeous home in Princeton, New Jersey. Drawing inspiration from his trips to Vence and Picardie in the French countryside, Peter Salerno set a luxurious tone in this bathroom with clean neutrals, distinct lines and a stunning ceiling.

Peter Salerno Inc. is experiencing a humbling and rewarding 2014 interior design awards season. First, we were honored with NKBA’s 2014 Best Small Kitchen award, as well as a Top 10 People’s Choice Award from HGTV for the same kitchen design.

Now, Peter Salerno and his team have been honored by Signature Kitchens & Baths Magazine with their prestigious 2014 1st Place, Best Bath Design award. Frequent readers of this blog will remember this stunning bathroom design from Princeton, New Jersey, created from the inspirations Peter took from a visit to the French countryside.

As was mentioned in the previous article about this gorgeous French-inspired bathroom, Peter Salerno and his team drew from various aspects of classic and contemporary French design. The light painted cabinetry was inspired by the Picardie region of France. Peter also chose the tile to reflect the kitchen’s custom stonework (a staple of design in Vence).

A look to the other region of the bathroom shows a beautiful porcelain tub set between two large windows – once again, to accentuate the copious amount of natural light this home’s location provides. A walk-in shower sits inside the far wall, and fresh linens await the user at every turn. Lastly, the brass fixtures and mounts reflect French design from the Oise region.

Peter Salerno and the entire team at Peter Salerno Inc. in Wyckoff, NJ, are greatly appreciative of this 1st Place, Best Bath award from Signature Kitchens & Baths Magazine – and even more appreciative of the fantastic homeowners who get to enjoy this award-winning bathroom every day!

A Look Back | A Kitchen Designer’s Trip To France

A Look Back | A Kitchen Designer’s Trip To France

The following are excerpts from articles in October 2013, when Peter Salerno, CMKBD, traveled to the French countryside for design inspiration. What he found in places like Oise and Vence informed several of his award-winning kitchen designs. Enjoy!

Oise (Picardie)

One of the most beautiful kitchen designs Peter Salerno discovered on his trip to France is a custom blue and white painted kitchen in Oise, a department of the Picardie region of northern France. Located about 19 miles north of Paris, Oise is a beautiful region made up primarily of hills and plateaus, as well as forests and plains, which evoke all the charm and beauty of the French countryside.

With the natural landscape and terrain of the Picardie region in mind, the designer of this kitchen (Sylvie Bisserie, whom you can read more about here) created a light, vibrant kitchen space filled with blues and whites accented with copper kitchenware, utensils and appliances. As the publication Maison Creative explains (translated from French):

“In the kitchen, created entirely by a custom cabinetmaker and painted with light and bright colors, Sylvie chose glazed tiles blue and white tiles that give the space cheer… decorating with rustic utensils and copper kitchen appliances to respond with the red soil creates a beautiful harmony.”

The kitchen space is said to convey “authenticity and conviviality”, an apt description of a lovely space that brought Peter Salerno fresh inspiration to his classic painted kitchen designs.

Vence (Alpes-Maritimes)

Peter Salerno’s travels for design inspiration throughout France also brought him to the town of Vence, located in the far southeast of France, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region. The Alpes-Maritimes department directly borders Monaco and Italy to the east and has some of the most beautiful and varied topography in all of France. As its name suggests, the region is characterized mainly by the maritime Alps – but it’s also one of the few French departments to feature a Mediterranean coastline.

The most well-recognized cities in the area are Nice and Cannes; Vence is the 12th-largest town in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Located in the hills between Nice and Antibes, Vence features many awe-inspiring, existing medieval elements – for example, the town’s historic village features a fountain originally built in 1578 and an oak planted in 1538. Other aspects of Vence architecture are even older; portions of the external wall were built in the 3rd century and the town’s cathedral was erected in the 4th century.

Design in Vence is based on open flow between rooms and the usage of beautiful, easy-to-use Vence stone, located not only in the town’s walls but in many of its rustic, gorgeous country homes. In the kitchen above, featured in the outstanding publication Maison Creative (Hors Serie 2, 2013), you can see the implementation of the flat, beautiful Vence stone and the open floor plan. The result is a bright, spacious kitchen that makes full use of the sunny climes of the Alpes-Maritimes region; Nice sees almost 1.5 times as much sun per year as the rest of France.

A white wood-burning fireplace and large windows adorn the kitchen walls, and the long slab dining table ensures there will be plenty of room for good food, great wine, and cherished guests.

October Home Design: French-Inspired Kitchen and Bath Photos

October Home Design Flashback: French Kitchen & Bath

It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since our blog first introduced you to a stunning French-inspired kitchen and bath design by Peter Salerno Inc. (the most award-winning North American kitchen and bath designer since 2002). The design trends present in Fall 2016 certainly tell us that everything about this gorgeous kitchen and bath design is still quite relevant – and very much in vogue!

At first blush, one would assume these design photos were taken in a French home. From the rustic, unpolished stone (evocative of the Vence region) to the exposed kitchen ceiling beams and the exquisite white claw foot tub, the design seems lifted from the French countryside.

In reality, these photos (courtesy of photographer Peter Rymwid) are of a home in Princeton, New Jersey. A 2013 visit to the French countryside certainly inspired master designer Peter Salerno and his team along the way, and notable French design elements fill this masterpiece.

As noted, the exposed rustic stone embedded around the kitchen door frame is reminiscent of the stone work found in France’s Vence region. The hand-painted custom cabinetry draws from the Picardie region.

The bath design (a 2014 Best Bath Design national award winner) incorporates a dramatic arched center ceiling, Maestro Rosolino custom cabinetry, checkerboard tile and a claw foot tub that is a pastoral design lover’s dream.

Looking at this design in 2016, it’s astonishing to see how many future design trends and color palettes were predicted by Peter Salerno Inc. Fall 2016 has declared alluring neutrals as “new mainstays” in home design. Tones from Pantone’s Fall 2016 color report like Potter’s Clay and Warm Taupe tie directly into this kitchen and bath design.

Touches of blue add a fresh, bold accent tone to the kitchen design. Chief among these is (of course) a La Cornue range in French blue, seen in the photo below. The handcrafted center island and custom tin range hood are luxurious, personalized options that help make this French-inspired design unique.

Extensive windows bring in beautiful natural light.

What’s your favorite aspect of this French-inspired kitchen and bath design? Is it the handcrafted cabinetry? The seemingly endless amount of ambient light? The rustic feel of design elements like exposed stone and ceiling beams? The opulence of the bath ceiling, chandelier and wall-to-wall vanity?

We’d love to hear from you – tell us what you love about this design in the comments!
