Cinco De Mayo is more than just a big party – although a great excuse to fiesta is always welcome! For Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and people of Mexican heritage worldwide, Cinco De Mayo is a day of national pride, honor and triumph. This article will help you celebrate Cinco De Mayo in proper style!

Cinco De Mayo literally means “May 5th” in Spanish. It’s a celebration of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory at the Battle of Puebla over the heavily-favored French Empire in 1862 – of course, the battle took place on May 5th. On that day, the French forces outnumbered Mexicans by double, but the Mexicans prevailed and established a sense of national pride and unity that had been lost in previous conflicts.

While not exactly an “Independence Day”, Cinco De Mayo is a celebration and recognition of Mexican pride, spirit, and bravery in the face of adversity. Outside Mexico, the holiday is used to promote Mexican culture, customs, food and music throughout the world, and is especially popular in the United States, Canada and Japan.

As you might expect, the colors closely associated with Cinco de Mayo are the official colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green. But what are the official colors of the flag of Mexico?

The PANTONE Autumn & Winter 2019-2020 Color Trend Report is out, and it’s certainly refreshing. PANTONE’s take on Fall 2019 is warmer than usual (we hope that reflects in the weather forecasts, too!), and the time is right to start looking at how these colors and trends reflect on home design – more specifically, design trends for your kitchen.

The 6 Best PANTONE Fall 2019 Colors for Kitchen Design

1. Bluestone

We’ve been saying for months that blue is the kitchen design color of 2019, and this blue-gray shade is our favorite color for design in the PANTONE Fall 2019 collection. Bluestone is sturdy and versatile, able to be utilized as a primary or complementary design color. We can envision Bluestone in a traditional “Dutch country” style kitchen, or a more transitional design with opulent Swarovski crystals and clean lines. Bluestone pairs brilliantly with any bright neutral, especially our next selection on this list.

2. Vanilla Custard

The PANTONE Autumn/Winter 2019-2020 collection brings the heat, and Vanilla Custard is the warm neutral that brings everything together. It’s hard to find a single color in this season’s collection that doesn’t pair well with Vanilla Custard. Its yellow undertones allow it to serve as a front-and-center neutral tone in a standout transitional kitchen design. If you’re looking for a neutral design color that’s more bold than staid, you can’t do much better than this one.

3. Peach Pink

If PANTONE signals Fall 2019 as a ‘warmer’ season than most autumn collections, we’d better take notice. Peach Pink is a lovely blush tone that doesn’t pull too much focus, and that’s important when using red and orange tones in a kitchen design. It’s a color to be used delicately, for sure, but it’s incredibly pleasing in proper doses. If you’re looking to brighten up your kitchen design, especially in a summer home or a more traditional space, Peach Pink could be a winner for you.

4. Hazel

Of the brown tones in the PANTONE Autumn 2019 collection, Hazel is the warmest and most appealing. Rocky Road and Sugar Almond have their place, for sure, but Hazel offers up the warmth needed to make your neutral and wood tones “pop” in the kitchen. If you’re looking for a color that plays well in transitional kitchen design and warms the space without dominating the landscape, Hazel is a strong option.

5. Paloma

Is Paloma the most aggressive choice? Absolutely not. But it serves an equally important purpose in your kitchen design – a backbone. This light, smoky gray isn’t so dark that it “pulls down” the space, but it’s saturated enough to offer balance and stability. Paloma is a gorgeous option to pair with tones like Bluestone and Vanilla Custard. Try it on your custom cabinets, kitchen island, or backsplash tile for a modern, clean aesthetic.

6. Guacamole

Want a more natural, leafy vibe in your kitchen? Guacamole is a tangy green tone that strays far enough away from conventional “kelly green” and “forest green” to create a conversation starter. As with Peach Pink, you’ll want a smart, experienced kitchen designer to execute Guacamole to its fullest potential in your kitchen, but the rewards far outweigh the cost with a color like this one.

With all the Autumn Heat dominating this fall’s color design landscape, PANTONE had to do something to cool it down a bit.

The 5 cool tones chosen by PANTONE to balance the overall heat of the Autumn 2019 Color Trend Report are thoughtful and understated. (Even the relative vibrance of a tone called Guacamole is muted when surrounded by Orange Tiger and Chili Pepper.)

Guacamole, Eden, Evening Blue, Galaxy Blue and Bluestone offer a bridge between the core Autumn 2019 PANTONE collection and its accompanying “Classics”. Guacamole stands a bit on its own, as Eden’s lush forest green stands a bit closer to the night sky of Evening Blue. Bluestone is a versatile and ‘quiet’ blue-gray that works beautifully in traditional and transitional kitchen and bath design. Galaxy Blue is “that” mainstay blue tone – royal, elegant and alluring.

The overall steadiness of PANTONE’s Autumn 2019 cool colors is a departure from the rest of the Autumn 2019 collection, and certainly from the Bold Optimism of the Spring 2019 Color Trend Report. Spring’s ‘cool colors’ were vibrant and commanded attention; tones like Pepper Stem and Princess Blue were less ‘shrinking violet’s and more center stage.

By contrast, Fall 2019’s cool tones are more sedate, more content to provide stability in the background. While the lush elegance of Eden and Evening Blue is evident, they’re not going to dazzle you from across the room.

And that sedate beauty is precisely what this season’s Color Trend Report needed. With firecrackers like Dark Cheddar and Fruit Dove going off all over this PANTONE collection, high-visibility cream tones like Crème de Pêche and Vanilla Custard demanding their own turn in the spotlight, and the sweet tones of Sugar Almond and Peach Pink pulling some focus, the cool colors in the PANTONE Autumn 2019 collection had to provide a quiet, complementary backbone.
