The Perfect Homemade Family Summer Sangria Recipe

When Peter Salerno married his wife Tracy, she brought with her a wealth of delicious recipes, cocktails and other “secret family recipes”. Tracy’s father, Mike Cavallo, was a master of many of these – but one of the family’s favorite creations from Mr. Cavallo was his famous sangria.

What makes the “Cavallo family sangria” recipe so delicious? It might be the perfect mix of ingredients, or the use of brandy and triple sec at the base. Or it may just be the special amount of love with which Mike made it.

In any event, it’s a sangria recipe that’s sure to please, and we’re sharing it with you. It’s the perfect summer sangria recipe to beat the heat!

Mike Cavallo’s Perfect Summer Sangria Recipe

Ingredients

  • 7Up/Sprite
  • Triple Sec
  • inexpensive brandy (something like christian bros)
  • a bottle of cheap red wine (barefoot works) either merlot or shiraz
  • ice
  • oranges (you can add apples and pears as well)

Preparation

  • Fill a *large* pitcher with whole slices of orange (leave the peels on), use a wooden spoon to press on the oranges to get a little bit of juice at the bottom.
  • Fill a 1/3 of the pitcher with ice
  • Pour even parts 7Up/Sprite and wine (pouring both at the same time is the easiest way) until 2/3 of the way filled
  • Pour equal parts brandy and triplesec to taste (usually about 1/2 -2/3 a cup)
  • Fill remaining with the rest of the wine
  • Stir and let sit for 10 minutes in the refrigerator
  • Enjoy!
If it comes out too strong for you, it can be diluted by adding more soda.
DON’T add sugar, citrus fruits (lime, lemon, pineapple), or bitters!

Red Sangria: Dubonnet Sangria Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 orange cut into wedges, plus 1 orange sliced into half wheels
  • 1 lemon cut into quarters, plus 1 lemon thinly sliced
  • 2 ounces Cognac
  • 2 tablespoons sugar, plus more to taste
  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle Dubonnet rouge
  • 6 dashes Angostura bitters (optional)
  • 2 cups cold sparkling water

Preparation

In a large bowl, combine the orange wedges, lemon quarters, Cognac, and 2 tablespoons sugar. Using a muddler or a wooden spoon, press down on the fruit mixture until the juice is released and the sugar is dissolved. Add the Dubonnet and stir to combine. Strain the mixture into a large pitcher and discard the fruit. Add the orange half wheels, lemon slices, and bitters, if using. Stir gently to combine then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 4 hours. When ready to serve, add the sparkling water, then carefully fill the pitcher with ice and stir to combine. Taste and add additional sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, if necessary.

White Sangria: Pineapple Sangria Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 small pineapple, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 2 cups white wine
  • 2 ounces simple syrup
  • 4 ounces white rum or 2 ounces each of light and aged rum
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 lime, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup cold sparkling water
  • 1 to 2 ounces Maraschino liqueur (optional)

Preparation

In a large pitcher, combine 2 cups pineapple, white wine, simple syrup, and rum. Stir gently then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, add the coconut water, lime juice, lime slices, and sparkling water. Add the Maraschino liqueur, if using, then carefully fill the pitcher with ice and stir to combine. Garnish glasses with the remaining pineapple, if desired, or add the fruit to the pitcher.

Blue Sangria: Cucumber-Vermouth Sangria Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish
  • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish
  • 1 (750-milliliter) bottle dry vermouth such as Dolin
  • 1 ounce blue or orange curaçao liqueur
  • 1 ounce simple syrup or more to taste
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 2 ounces dry gin
  • 2 cups cold sparkling water
  • 1/2 to 1 ounce Maraschino liqueur (optional)
  • Mint for garnish

Preparation

In a large pitcher, combine the lemon slices, cucumber slices, and vermouth. Stir gently then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 4 hours. When ready to serve, add the curaçao, simple syrup, lemon juice, gin, sparkling water, and Maraschino liqueur, if using. Carefully fill the pitcher with ice and stir to combine. Garnish glasses with mint, plus additional lemon and cucumber slices.
