Design Trends: Modern Takes on Timeless Black + White Tile

Design Trends: Modern Takes on Timeless Black + White Tile

‘Timeless’ doesn’t have to mean ‘vintage’. A truly timeless design motif can be updated consistently and with dramatic effect. Like the “little black dress”, a truly iconic look can always be reinterpreted for modern times.

Recently, the official Peter Salerno Inc. Instagram account took a look at modern takes on another timeless design theme – black and white tile. We’d say black & white tile design is making a comeback in 2019, but it never really went anywhere.

Still, with every new design season comes a plethora of updated takes on one of the most classic motifs in custom kitchen and bath design. From trusted advisors like Houzz and House Beautiful to HGTV and Elle Decor, black and white tile ideas are everywhere. But as always, the first place we turn is the most award-winning custom kitchen and bath design firm of the 21st century.

Why does black and white tile design work? As Jessica Gordon Ryan, founder of Gimlet Marketing, wrote quite eloquently:

For those who struggle with color, this takes the guesswork out of the equation, without being colorless. For those who embrace color, it can always be added in with accessories. With black and white anything goes – it’s like the little black dress for the home!

The color pairing of black & white in home design is timeless, so what are today’s designers doing to make a classic idea become contemporary?

Like a science experiment, every classic design motif needs a “control” element. Here, the control is two-fold: the color (black and white) and the medium (tile).

From there, everything else is in play. Construction, shape, material, and artistic interpretation are what makes this season’s black and white tile options particularly memorable.

Mixed media appears to be popular in this season’s black and white tile designs; we’re seeing stone and glass elements make their way into tile construction and overall design concepts. Geometric and mosaic patterns in tile design are very popular and provide a “retro” element to the design space. And single-color metallic additions (like bronze, silver and gold) add an element of heightened class and ‘dazzle’.

Today’s Trending Kitchen Design Features on Instagram

Today’s Trending Kitchen Design Features on Instagram

Instagram has become THE must-watch social media platform for designers and design enthusiasts. Kitchen design inspiration is everywhere on Instagram – but which posts are “on trend”, and which are simply filler content?

Here are 5 kitchen design trends we’ve identified in recent Instagram posts (courtesy of Peter Salerno Inc.’s Instagram account) that we think you NEED to watch.

1. Chevron Tile (with creative materials)

Chevron tile is starting to make a challenge to classic subway tile in today’s trending kitchen backsplash designs. If you’re going with a chevron pattern, take the extra step of using bold, eye-catching materials. The use of turquoise as a feature design material in the chevron tile pattern below turns a yawner into a real winner!

2. Quartz and Quartzite… as Kitchen Islands!

Yes, quartz is a true contender to the marble throne when it comes to kitchen countertops… but who knew it could be utilized as the main material for a kitchen island base? This quartz island base features cabinet cutouts and a simple white countertop, drawing attention to the island itself rather than the top. This is a bold choice that we love (and that we’re following closely)!

3. Statement Sinks and Sink Basins

This proposed sink basin (from Peter Salerno Inc.) is a jaw-dropping statement piece. Much like the quartz island base above, the real trend here is making statements with the often ‘forgotten’ elements in your kitchen or bath design. Instead of focusing all your effort on the counter, the backsplash, or other ‘expected’ design areas, why not stand apart from the crowd by featuring a unique design piece like this sink?

4. 3-D Renderings: A MUST from Design Consultants and Firms

If your design consultant or design team aren’t offering high-quality 3-D renderings of their design proposals, you simply aren’t getting the experience you deserve from today’s design industry. Custom 3-D renderings of your future kitchen design have gone from ‘luxury’ to ‘necessity’, and you owe it to yourself to see your design space as a finished product before work in your home even begins.

5. Using Kitchen Seating to Continue Design Patterns

The geometric square pattern on the back of these chairs allow the designer to weave the kitchen’s overall theme through its island counter seating. The ability to continue patterns and themes through kitchen seating helps tie in the overall design aesthetic and keep your kitchen cohesive.

Impressive Interior Design’s Modern Fireplace Tile Ideas

Awesome Design Article From Impressive Interior Design

We at “Design Your Lifestyle” take great pride in sharing the best custom design ideas for your bath, kitchen and home – even if they’re from another blog! Such is the case today, as we happily share with you a great piece from Impressive Interior Design.

Andreea and the team at Impressive Interior Design run an expert, informative blog presented beautifully in a clean, minimalist package. A site that incorporates clean design based on plenty of open space, smart use of neutrals and whites, and eye-popping floral accent colors? We’d say that as “stylish for 2017” as you can get!

The article that caught our eye was “Modern Fireplace Tile Ideas“, a great feature piece that covers trendy, aesthetically-pleasing fireplace tile options. The Impressive Interior Design team leaves no stone (or pebble) unturned, featuring a wide variety of tile options for your fireplace that covers virtually any overall home design.

The role of the fireplace in living quarters has shifted from simple appliance to a design focal point in recent years, as Impressive Interior Design intelligently points out in this excerpt:

The fireplace is a synonym for a comfortable home, but it is also a place where you can show your designing capabilities.

Modern fireplaces are welcomed in any home because of their easy operation and most importantly the warmth they create.

Good old fireplaces have received a new furnace and design making them the main focal point of the room, the “jewels” in the interior.

The article breaks down modern fireplace tile design ideas into two categories: “style” and “substance”, for lack of an easier breakdown.

In terms of style, Andreea and her team recommend such trends as patterned tile layout, faux aging of materials and the use of neutrals as core colors. We also love the bold, “throwback” choice of a herringbone tile pattern.

When it comes to substance, we’re dealing with what your fireplace tile is actually made of. From glass to ceramic, pebble to terra cotta, marble to granite, Impressive Interior Designs gives you a variety of options from which to choose – and we like that. An expert designer thrives in creative versatility, and the myriad of options given in this article speaks to its artistic vision and spirit.

Peter Salerno Inc.’s 20 Years In Design: ‘Then and Now’ Showroom Photos

Peter Salerno Inc.’s Design Showrooms: Then and Now Photos

In our last two articles celebrating Peter Salerno Inc.‘s 20 years of award-winning custom kitchen, bath and home design, we’ve shown you photos from the very beginning of Peter Salerno’s design journey, as well as a look back at Peter Salerno Inc.’s 2006 Hurricane Katrina home construction to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

We thought it would be fun in this piece to show you the differences between “then and now” in terms of Peter Salerno Inc.’s Wyckoff, New Jersey showrooms. The original Peter Salerno Inc. showroom (opened in 1997) and the current showroom existed on adjacent lots, but they feel worlds apart.

The original Peter Salerno Inc. showroom, founded in 1997 on Goffle Road in Wyckoff, NJ, was a converted two-story home that became the foundation for the most award-winning custom design firm in North America in the 21st century. Above, you can see the humble beginnings of the Peter Salerno Inc. brand…

And below, you can see the design wonderland that is 511 Goffle Road, Wyckoff, New Jersey. Home to Peter Salerno Inc., Stratta the Tile Boutique, and Oberg & Lindqust Appliances, Peter Salerno Inc. is now a one-stop design destination for the discriminating home or business owner.

The new Peter Salerno Inc. showroom sits adjacent to the old showroom’s location.

Peter Salerno is the son of Rosolino Salerno (“Maestro Rosolino”), an expert woodworker and cabinetry designer whose trade was honed in Sicily. From the beginning of his career, Peter took pride in plying his own skills after those of his father, and can be seen hand-carving a wooden eagle feature outside his original design showroom in 1997 (see below).

Today, Peter’s design expertise has led him to partner with some the world’s foremost brands in design, including Miele (whose transitional kitchen design feature was designed by Peter Salerno Inc. for his showroom, seen below), La Cornue, Rangecraft, Sub-Zero, Wolf, EDGES Custom Cutlery, Purcell-Murray and TopBrewer.

While the original Peter Salerno Inc. showroom had its charm, the current Peter Salerno Inc. design showroom at 511 Goffle Road in Wyckoff, New Jersey, is a destination for lovers of world-class design, and a winner of the KBIS Most Innovative Showroom award.

Take a look for yourself at one of the design vignettes in Peter’s original showroom (first picture below) in 1997, followed by the current, awe-inspiring La Cornue master kitchen design in today’s showroom.

We love these photos, as a testament to Peter Salerno’s growth as a designer – but also for their similarities in custom design, small unique touches, and master woodworking craftsmanship that have been hallmarks of Peter Salerno Inc. design since 1997.
