Reaching New Design Heights: A Boom Crane Countertop Installation

Reaching New Design Heights: A Boom Crane Countertop Installation

Sometimes, the title of a design article is quite literal. In this case, the team at Peter Salerno Inc. employed a massive boom to install a world-class luxury glass countertop in a high-rise kitchen overlooking Manhattan. The videos must be seen to be believed!

Peter Salerno Inc. is the most award-winning American custom kitchen and bath design firm of the 21st century, with awards from prestigious organizations like the NKBA, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Signature Kitchens & Baths. For this particular kitchen design, the task was at once simple and complex. The simple part: installing a fabulous kitchen counter from Galaxy Glass & Stone.

The hard part? Getting that luxurious, hand-crafted counter to a high-rise apartment overlooking the gorgeous skyline of Manhattan.

Team members from Peter Salerno Inc. and Galaxy Glass & Stone decided to hoist the countertop using the assistance of a massive boom crane, delicately lifting the counter up the side of the luxury apartment building. From there, the crew carefully brought the counter inside the apartment, and completed the kitchen installation.

The result was well worth the effort. The clients now have a one-of-a-kind conversation piece as the centerpiece of their kitchen design!

The beautiful countertop is laced with metal, then topped with glass for an industrial, transitional look. The counter blends nicely with the custom range hood on the kitchen’s feature wall, and plays well against the rich brown cabinetry, drawers, and kitchen island base.

Peter Salerno’s personal trademarks abound in this kitchen design. From the recessed soffit above the kitchen island to the clean, neutral color scheme, this transitional kitchen provides eye-popping features and design elements that transcend simple trends. It’s important to have a kitchen design that takes current design trends and implements them in a way that becomes timeless.

Our Favorite Kitchen Design from 2019’s First Half | Transitional Kitchen Photos

Our Favorite Kitchen Design from 2019’s First Half | Transitional Kitchen Photos

When you have the luxury of looking at world-class kitchen design on a daily basis, you tend to get a bit spoiled. But in terms of the first half of 2019, one transitional kitchen design stood out from the rest.

This kitchen design from Peter Salerno Inc. started with a reclamation project: a collection of vintage wooden beams from St. Patrick’s Orphanage in New York City. Designer Peter Salerno (CMKBD) took one look at the beams and knew they had to be saved. A quick trip into NYC to reclaim the rustic beams, and the project was on.

The reclaimed wood beams frame the ceiling in stark contrast to the modernity of the transitional kitchen below. The white island countertop and backsplash are set against gorgeous hand-crafted, hand-painted white and gray cabinets. The massive twin refrigerator and glass-enclosed wine rack take up a full feature wall, while the opposite end of the kitchen features large windows and a dining nook to allow in plenty of warm, ambient light.

The range hood enclosure demands attention as a centerpiece of the transitional design, evoking imagery of a grand piano painted gray to match the kitchen. The neutral color palette of the kitchen design allows the crossing vintage wood beams on the ceiling to take center stage, pulling the eye upward to notice all the beautiful design elements that exist near the top of the kitchen (the glass featurettes, the range hood, the statement island lighting, etc.).

This Peter Salerno Inc. transitional kitchen design also features a steady dose of Princess Blue, one of PANTONE’s breakout design colors of the year. The notes of blue are mainly featured in dishes and stemware, allowing ambient light to reflect beautifully off the blue glass.

How Does A Rusty Car Inspire a Beautiful Transitional Kitchen Design?

How Does A Rusty Car Inspire a Beautiful Transitional Kitchen Design?

Peter Salerno was handed a photograph of an abandoned, rusty car by a kitchen design client. “Use this as inspiration,” he was told.

And so he did.

The resulting transitional kitchen design is equal parts rustic and modern, audacious and beautiful. From its unorthodox color scheme to its unexpected materials, statement lighting pieces to state-of-the-art appliances, the team at Peter Salerno Inc. turned a rusty car into a Bentley of a kitchen.

Let’s break this beautiful kitchen design down, piece by piece.

The Custom Range Hood + Cabinetry

The metal work on the custom range hood and cabinetry is actually naturally rusted – and protected, of course. The metal artist hired by Peter Salerno Inc. to construct these pieces kick-started the process before letting the metal rust naturally over the course of several months. Once the aging process began, the metal was treated with acid, painted, and lacquered to create the eye-popping patina you see. The metal was then exposed to a blow torch to complete the finished product.

The Unexpected Materials and Colors

Look closely under the surface of the kitchen table and orange-colored panels, and you’ll discover a material you’d never expect. Rice paper was utilized to create added texture throughout the kitchen design to match the patina on the range hood and cabinets. The counters are a unique, beautiful Blue Louise Granite, which pairs nicely with the orange tone of the center panels on the wall unit.

The Extra ‘Perks’ of a Peter Salerno Inc. Kitchen

From the asymmetric form of the metallic statement lighting pieces to the eclectic wall art, unique ‘perks’ abound in this transitional kitchen design. We absolutely love the lighting pieces, which are reminiscent of old car fenders.

On our first glance of this kitchen design, we immediately recognized the La Cornue Flamberge rotisserie, one of the finest rotisserie units on the market today. We love the utility and function of the deep basin sink, the side cooking unit on the kitchen island, and the ‘tucked-away’ nature of the refrigerator, which blends seamlessly into the wall unit.

Beauty is everywhere. It’s not always obvious; sometimes, beauty is simply looking at things in a new way.

A quick glance at the vintage wooden ceiling beams in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Orphanage wouldn’t impress many. In fact, these beams were all but destined for the scrap heap until a world-class designer saw them through his unique set of eyes.

Peter Salerno didn’t just see a set of old beams. He saw an opportunity to reclaim a piece of history and incorporate it into a world-class transitional kitchen design.

The result? In a word: WOW.

This transitional kitchen design (from a home in Pearl River) blends today’s most sought-after design elements with a sense of old-world charm. This luxurious contrast is thanks, in large part, to the very same reclaimed vintage wood beams set for disposal just a few months earlier.

People often tell you to “look up” for inspiration. While the phrase is metaphorical for most, it’s to be taken quite literally in this kitchen design. The vintage wood beams dare to be noticed, sitting boldly bare above a white and gray kitchen space. Two large statement lighting fixtures invite the eye upward from the custom transitional kitchen island to the intersecting beam structure, adding a touch of rustic charm to the elegance of the kitchen below.

The beams sit in contrast with the finished wood floor below, and the overall kitchen design invites the eye to notice and appreciate that contrast.

Why the BEST Kitchen Designs Feature Custom Range Hoods

Custom Range Hoods: A Must-Have In Beautiful Kitchen Designs

If you’re re-designing your kitchen or updating your kitchen design, a custom range hood is something you must consider.

With custom kitchen design taking center stage in home design, a statement piece is vital to creating the “wow factor” that sets your kitchen apart. So why do we believe a custom range hood is THAT statement piece? Let’s look at the trends in kitchen design to find out.

You’re probably not making a massive statement in kitchen design with color. Neutral tones, whites and grays are dominating the transitional kitchen color palette. The same goes for backsplash and wall tile, which are trending heavily towards popular, neutrally-based tones of subway tile. But it’s still possible to stand out in a chic, sleek transitional kitchen without using an outlandish color scheme…

Would you just look at that stunning custom range hood? The range hood was designed by RangeCraft USA, and utilized in a transitional kitchen design by Peter Salerno Inc. (RangeCraft’s design was requested halfway around the world, by kitchen design clients in Moscow!)

Custom range hoods are often considered “too DIY” or “too opulent” to be utilized in transitional kitchen design. That’s simply not true. Master craftsmen like those at RangeCraft consistently produce beautiful, unique, to-order custom range hoods for transitional kitchens that are as sleek as they are efficient and useful. (Check out the one below!)

That’s not to say that custom range hoods in today’s best kitchen designs can’t fit into opulent, luxury traditional kitchen designs. The example below (in an award-winning Peter Salerno Inc. traditional kitchen) uses reclaimed tin to dramatic effect. After all, it takes a lot to be a focal point in a kitchen that features a hand-carved mirrored ceiling, massive twin kitchen islands, crystal chandelier and custom handcrafted “Maestro Rosolino” cabinetry. And yet, the reclaimed tin (which is duplicated on the front of the kitchen’s refrigerator) does just that.

Of course, a quality custom range hood is about function as much as form. If your range hood isn’t performing at an exceptional level, then it doesn’t matter how beautiful yours is – you risk exposure to harmful smoke and vapors. As the official RangeCraft website explains, the marriage of form and function is the trademark of the world’s best range hoods:

A top quality range hood is an essential part of a well-designed high-end kitchen because it will help to protect your cabinetry, flooring, countertops and appliances. RangeCraft Range Hoods are truly a functional work of design art. The Jewel of the Kitchen, it also removes unwanted cooking smoke and vapors quickly and quietly. (RangeCraft offers super quiet internal fans that are less noisy than a quiet refrigerator.) Many customers choose a RangeCraft Hood first and then design their cabinetry and accessories around the hood as the focal point.
