2020 Memorial Day Official Colors + Design Ideas

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend and a holiday. It’s a chance to honor America’s military veterans and heroes who laid down their lives for the security and stability of the United States.

There are many ways to remember America’s finest and show honor and respect on Memorial Day. As any great designer will tell you, color can represent thoughts, feelings and emotions beautifully.

With so many reasons to stop and reflect in 2020, this may be the perfect year to really take our time and properly honor our heroes and our history.

The official ribbon color of Memorial Day is yellow. But why? The earliest roots of the tradition tie to the poem “She wore a yellow ribbon”, which has been in existence for roughly 4 centuries. In it, a woman wears a yellow ribbon while waiting for a man she loves to return from a great test or trial. The tradition carried on through Protestant England, where the Puritan Army wore yellow ribbons and sashes during the English Civil War.

Yellow became the official color of the armor branch of the U.S. Army, and was first brought into popular culture by the artist Frederic Remington.

The poem “She wore a yellow ribbon” was updated into song and first published in 1917 as a military marching song by George Norton. However, the yellow ribbon’s popularity and tie to the U.S. military became entrenched during World War II, when the song was re-written and released in the 1949 film “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”. Versions of the song were released by the Andrews Sisters, Mitch Miller and others.

Modern Americans are much more familiar with the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Old Oak Tree”, although it will surprise many to know it was not written until the 1970s.

Color design lovers, prepare for an explosion of color in Spring 2018! Pantone has released its Spring 2018 color palette that offers 12 bold color choices, as well as a “Classic color palette” that presents another 4 selections.

It’s a huge leap forward for Pantone, the world’s foremost authority on color design and color matching. In recent years, Pantone has released seasonal collections of 10 colors, offering plenty of selection and inspiration for color design enthusiasts.

Pantone’s Spring 2018 color palette delivers a knockout punch of bright colors, floral blooms, and vibrant tones. It’s interesting to note that the neutral tones selected for the Spring 2018 collection are a departure from grays and off-blacks of past seasons. Instead, Pantone focuses its neutral tones on woodsy, earthy browns and gentle off-whites.

In this article, we’ll focus in on the 3 brightest colors in the Pantone Spring 2018 color palette, and what makes them valuable to your design palette this season. From a knockout green to a bright red-orange to a versatile yellow, these 3 Pantone colors will liven up your Spring 2018 designs in a big way!

Lime Punch (Pantone 13-0550)

There might not be a more aptly named color in the Pantone palette than Lime Punch. An absolutely knockout neon shade of green, Lime Punch is the most in-your-face, unapologetic color in the Spring 2018 collection… and we love it.

Many people will look at Lime Punch and instantly dismiss it as a “fashion design color only”. While that may be the case in a lot of circumstances, Lime Punch certainly has utility in home design as well. A splash of this hot green into a living space, beach home, or even a bath design can jazz up a design in no time.

Cherry Tomato (Pantone 17-1563)

Pantone’s Cherry Tomato is the color of… well, a cherry tomato. Much like Lime Punch, it’s a perfectly labeled shade, a bright red hue bordering ever-so-slightly on orange. It’s a zesty shade, and a definite departure from more conservative red shades in past Pantone seasonal palettes.

Cherry Tomato is naturally a dominating color in any design, so use it sparingly and wisely. More of a complementary shade than a primary design element, Cherry Tomato (when used properly) can be a fantastic way to spice up a kitchen design or living area redecoration.

Meadowlark (Pantone 13-0646)

We’re not sure if the name of this yellow is a tip of the cap to Meadowlark Lemon, renowned member of the Harlem Globetrotters. Perhaps it’s just reflective of the bright yellow breast of the Meadowlark itself. Either way, this sun-lit shade of yellow certainly captures the essence of lemon in its tone, and officially leads the charge of bright colors in the Pantone Spring 2018 color palette.

Meadowlark is a versatile yellow – just bold enough to grab your attention, and just subtle enough to pair well with a variety of colors in your home design. A natural winner in kitchen design, bath design and any outdoor space, Meadowlark is a great way to bring some “pop” into the color of your home design without being overbearing.

It’s that beautiful time of spring, when everything is in bloom, the weather starts getting warm (and staying warm!), and we get to honor the wonderful women in our lives with Mother’s Day gifts, cards and flowers.

It can be a slightly awkward affair at times – especially when picking flowers, can’t it? We often find ourselves poring over the floral selection, wondering what each color of roses symbolizes, and whether or not we’re being appropriate (especially if it’s a mother-in-law or a friend!). Are red roses too romantic? Are yellow roses too “friendly” and not “loving enough”?

The Perfect Colors For Mother’s Day Design

1. Primrose Yellow.

Our lead writer may be a bit biased here: his mother, after all, has a “sunny” disposition when it comes to life and her favorite songs. From “Here Comes the Sun” to “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”, it only seemed appropriate to list the hottest shade of bright, sunny yellow from the Spring 2017 Pantone collection as our #1 color design pick for Mother’s Day.

Primrose Yellow (13-0755 TCX) is optimistic, warm, and friendly – perfect for Mother’s Day. Whether it be yellow roses, carnations, gift wrap, lemon cookies (or a bottle of Limoncello), this shade conveys all the love and warmth you want to show Mom this year.

2. Pale Dogwood.

Much like Primrose Yellow, our next color choice comes straight from Pantone’s Spring 2017 color collection. Pale Dogwood (13-1404 TCX) is a light, blushing pink that reflects feminine charm and genuine affection. Unlike a hotter shade of pink (which might set a more romantic or distracting tone), a calmer shade like Pale Dogwood conveys the proper message.

A light shade of pink like this one is a great choice for gift wrap, flowers, table settings, and invitations.

3. Lily White.

Don’t judge a color by its name! Such is the case with Lily White (11-4301 TCX), which upon further inspection has a subtle hint of green underneath its neutral white tone. The perfect neutral to accompany all 3 of the other shades in this collection, Lily White manages to be a “warm” white to draw some attention in the midst of its pastel compatriots.

Lily White is a beautiful color choice for present packaging or gift wrap/ribbon, table settings, invitations, vases and other textiles, and a great “pairing color” for the others on this list.

4. Violet Tulip.

Roses are a popular floral choice for Mother’s Day bouquets. But a close second to roses are tulips – and a great purple shade with the tulip in mind rounds out this year’s collection of Mother’s Day colors in our Pantone color palette. Violet Tulip (16-3823 TCX) is a cool lavender shade that is soothing to see.

Use a light lavender shade like Violet Tulip in floral arrangements, “bath and spa” gifts, gift wrap, and in room decor if you’re hosting a Mother’s Day brunch or get-together at your home.

A spring green, Greenery (15-0343 TCX) signaled a fresh start to a new year, as well as Pantone’s optimistic outlook for the 2017 year in color and design.

It remained to be seen, however, just how “sunny” that outlook would be all year round. Well, if the Pantone Spring 2017 Color Trends Report is any indication, we’re in for a bright and beautiful year of color!

The 10 colors selected as the official Spring 2017 Pantone colors are bright, cheery, and based largely in the natural world around us. From sky blues to floral yellows and pinks, nutty neutrals to verdant greens (including Greenery itself), the color palette for Spring 2017 is one of our favorites in recent memory.

Niagara: A Blue Hue That Signals Fresh, Clear Skies

Niagara evokes memories of Riverside (17-4028 TCX), a Summer 2016 Pantone color selection that brought to mind running water, bright denim and clear, blue skies. Selected by many color design experts as the “leading” color of the Spring 2017 Pantone palette, Niagara is comfortable and easy on the eyes – a key reason why home designers and fashion designers alike have praised it for its versatility.

In terms of home design, Niagara functions beautifully as both an accent color and the core color of virtually any room. Though sitting rooms, sun rooms and baths come to mind, Niagara can be utilized effectively as an accent color in kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms as well.

While many as quick to call Niagara a “denim blue”, closer inspection will reveal a slightly bolder blue. This trait has made Niagara a hit on fashion design runways, incorporated in everything from print jackets to evening gowns. However you incorporate this fresh shade of blue into your home or personal design, Niagara is a smart (and long-lasting) choice for a Spring 2017 update.

Primrose Yellow: A Beautiful, Sunny Bloom

Many of us know the song, “The Yellow Rose of Texas”. Well, if it happened to be Primrose Yellow, we understand what all the fuss is about. Evocative of daffodils and early morning sunshine, Primrose Yellow is a warm dash of color across the Spring 2017 runways and home design exhibits.

Warmer than a conventional yellow but not quite a golden jewel tone, Primrose Yellow is a brilliant accent color for home designers. Set against a Spring 2017 neutral like Hazelnut, or a strong blue like Niagara or Lapis Blue, Primrose Yellow can provide a “pop” of color without appearing too pastel or dainty. A kitchen or bath in need of a spark will fare well with this shade as a new accent.

In terms of fashion design, Primrose Yellow has been utilized to great effect with other warmer colors in the Spring 2017 Pantone palette. Audacious designers have paired it with Island Paradise to create a floral, tropical feel in their wardrobe designs. Again, pairing Primrose Yellow with a denim blue (like Niagara) or a nutty neutral (like Hazelnut) is a successful, stylish match.
